Day 102: Decorating With Zombies

This entry is part 17 of 17 in the series First Austin Reno

Last night the hubby and I were watching a horror movie. The main characters lived in a fancy pants house with tile and hardwood floors. (Sadly, this is what I notice while people are fending off intruders. When a zombie is eating someone’s brain, I look over its shoulder to see if that light fixture would look good in my kitchen.) Between the rooms, there was no transition between the tile and hardwood. The different materials simply butt up to one another. It looked great, but I don’t think I can pull that off. How, pray tell, do you keep dirt from gathering in that little gap between the floors? And how could I possibly make that space tight enough to look decent? Screw it. T-molding has a home here. When I’m rich the contractors can figure out the answers to those questions during the interrogation, sorry, vetting process.

Day 101, yesterday, was a good work day, but I can’t claim to have made much noticeable progress. I finished painting the molding and windowsills, and started the archaeological dig to scrape all of the crap off the cement floor. One spot appears as though a machine barfed oil and then used carpet padding to soak it up. I am thoroughly grossed out by what was hiding under that carpeting.

Today, Day 102, I am determined to start laying the hardwood, if the weather holds out. It’s sprinkled a couple of times this morning already and the forecast claims it will rain until Tuesday. In a drought-ridden city that’s good news for most, except I am on a mission and I need clear skies. Camping in the dining room has lost its charm.

In the rest of my house, the refrigerator looks like I survive on condiments right now and every surface is getting pretty dingy. It’s reminding of the scene in “What Dreams May Come” where the wife puts herself in her personal hell. She’s in the family home, but a dark cloud rolls over and everything rots and becomes covered in spider webs and dust. The decor is all too familiar. Mr. Clean and Mrs. Windex are invited over tonight to rectify this situation and unless I want to have honey and ketchup for dinner, I see a grocery run in my future.

I just saw a single ray of sun. I’m considering this a starting gun.
